My Sonos Roam disconnects and reconnects from my wifi network literally every minute. My network is a Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra and U6 Pro AP. When connected, the Unifi console shows the Experience for the Roam as “”Excellent”. Other devices in the same room do not have this problem.

Any idea how I can diagnose/fix this?

The signal levels are low. I can imagine that a person walking near the unit could cause a dropout. -60dBm is not so bad, but -80dBm is likely very near the threshold. Physically relocating ROAM or the access point, even slightly, might help.

You can check ROAM’s view of the situation here.

Looking at your data again: The access point is struggling, jumping from channel to channel and band to band, probably attempting to find a better connection -- forcing ROAM to attempt to catch up. You may be able to achieve slightly better results if you disable channel hopping, but you really need more signal strength. An added complication could be caused by WiFi interference.

You Roam is constantly switching between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz band. I suspect your Roam prefers the 2.4GHz (stronger signal) but the UniFi Network has band steer enabled, and forcing the Roam to reconnect to 5GHz (weaker signal), Repeat…….

This is what I would do:

  1. Turn OFF band steer, let the client(s) decide what is best AP.
  2. On the AP settings, set a minimum RSSI on the 5GHz band of -75dBm
  3. Change the channel width from 80MHz to 40MHz on the 5GHz band to avoid possible interference.

Thanks for all the feedback. In view of the apparent issues with wifi signal strength, I decided to bite the bullet and buy another access point for that room. The problem has now gone.

I am puzzled as to why the Roam was the only device in that room to keep hopping from one access point to another (there are at least 4 other “static” devices quite near it, none of which exhibited that behaviour)

WiFi signal strength can vary wildly in three dimensions.

We cannot rule out a hardware issue with the ROAM — weak transmitter power. This will be difficult to prove unless you have instruments or another ROAM nearby.
